As described by The Telegraph, “the gentle, folky, confidential” tones of Lucy Rose will be …

As described by The Telegraph, “the gentle, folky, confidential” tones of Lucy Rose will be gracing The Lemon Grove this Monday, 20th May.

Her gig- The Middle of the Bed- is one of the most upcoming bands the Lemmy has seen this year, which has been initiated by Blanket Recordings; a company established and run purely by young people from Exeter’s university and college.

Having made a great impression whilst touring with bands such as Bombay Bicycle Club and Noah and The Whale, Rose has now made a stunning solo album “Like I Used To”.

For those of you wanting to branch out of your usual musical comfort-zone and attend Lucy’s gig on Monday, I highly recommend you check out her addictive track “Shiver”… as it will have that exact same effect on you!

Blanket Recordings – the organisers behind the event – are a record and promotions company started up by Exeter’s very own guitar slapping sensation, Lewis Lawrence, last September, with the help of colleagues from the Phoenix.

Their idea sprung from the lack of good, live, music in Exeter, despite its wealth in local talent. Anyone attempting to conquer the industry will know how tough it is to achieve success; this was also inspiration for instigating Blanket Recordings.

An exciting venture for Blanket “Promotionions”…

The idea is to make a fully functional record and promotions company, entirely run by young people for those upcoming artists with limited opportunities. So far Blanket Records have a team of around a dozen university and college students responsible for marketing and PR events to further the company’s name.

On sale at the Lucy Rose gig this coming Monday will also be local musician Aidan Simpson’s first EP on sale, recorded and produced by Blanket Records as well.

Just like us, Blanket Records are excited to have organised such a big name to perform at the University’s Lemmy. Struggling on with the mission to bring great music to us at Exeter, Blanket Records have also been said to be arranging gigs from great talent such as Daughter and John Grant.

For those fancying a great night of raw Indie Folk flair this Monday then details for tickets are can be found here.

Not only is this a fantastic opportunity to support real music from real talent, but to also show our fellow students at Blanket Record our appreciation for their efforts.

After a heated debate, students voted 'No' against The Sun's ban on campus.

It’s official: The Sun will continue to shine on campus.

The results from the Guild referendum on whether or not The Sun should be banned from its campus shop are in, and it’s good news for News International.

The Sun will not be banned and bare breasts will still be available on Page 3.

The vote saw a turnout of just under 14%, but debate raged on campus this week as the Yes and No campaigns set about making as much noise as possible.

A student debate last night, broadcast by Xpression FM, saw the side against the ban win 66 to 22, reflecting both a pre-debate poll and the final referendum result.

TabTV got in on the act as questions were asked about the suitability of bare boobs on campus.

The Sun neatly predicting its own victory

In a statement, the Guild said: “After a record-breaking number of votes, The Guild can now announce the results of the student vote on the motion “Should the Students’ Guild ban The Sun from its shop, and campaign for it to be banned from all University outlets, until the editors remove the bare boobs from Page 3?” are as follows:

Votes cast: 2,441
Turn Out: 13.77%
Votes FOR: 919
Votes AGAINST: 1,504
ABSTENTIONS: 18

The motion was deemed to be NOT CARRIED.

We would like to congratulate both campaigns on the excellent work they did in involving students on the issue. This last week has been an incredible example of student engagement, and democracy at it’s finest.”

Smile, students- you could be on camera.

For the first time ever, CCTV footage from around Exeter is being streamed live into police control rooms – and it’s been so successful, the police are calling for direct campus CCTV.

Smile, you’re on camera

The link became live last week and is allowing operatives in Mildmoor to directly witness incidents and relay information to teams on the ground, cutting out the middle-man and increasing their unit’s speed.

Exeter City Council has been thrilled by the success and are looking at the possibility of linking Exeter University and the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital to the system.

Late – night Lemmy lovers beware – your walk of shame may not be as secret as you think.

We won a night with Jamie Laing on UniRoulette last weekend - this is what happened.

When you pardy with yer boi Jamie Laing, you gotta prepare. Catching up on the previous week’s episode of Made in Chelsea as well as practising our ‘yahs’ and ‘myahs’ we thought we were ready. Unfortunately our livers were not quite as prepared for the onslaught.

Definitely didn’t cost a fiver…

Dresses donned and after a few swigs of Dutch courage, there was only one way to arrive in style, by public transport…awkward pause.

Footballer spotting at the Bluebird

Luckily the bus dropped us right outside our meeting place, the Chelsea landmark bar and restaurant Bluebird on the King’s Road. Looks like there are some perks to public transport after all! In true Chelsea style we got the Bloody Marys in and waited for the main man to arrive.

Before we knew it we were ushered into a private area and the boozing began. Jamie was joined by Tade and Tosh Oyerinde and Patrick Molgaard, soon to be international party boys and the brains behind Gleepost uniRoulette, and two other competition winners.

Candy Kittens

After the sixth round we were firm friends and as the news came in that the website had reached 8,000 users, the brothers decided it was time to spend the equivalent of half a month’s student rent on Moet. Not complaining.

Enough drinks?

So we’d all had a few shandys and it was time to talk Made In Chelsea. In the words of Mr Laing himself: scripted reality it is not, IT’S ALL REAL.

Aside from the cameras of course, but just imagine how ridiculous your life could seem if producers were digging up your dirt, setting up awkward situations and catching that night you couldn’t remember on film. ”We’re all just pawns on a chess board,” said Jamie, in complete seriousness.

Pardy pardy Chelsea style

Here’s some gossip for fans of the show: Spencer Matthews and Lucy Watson are a real item. “Spennie’s not a bad guy he’s actually really cool”. Louise Thompson in the fall out from her relationship with Spencer is ‘a psycho’ and despite bagging Andy Jordan is already playing away.

New character alert – you saw him here first

This series seems set to be bitchier than ever before and it’s only a matter of time before the catfights begin. We can’t wait either.

Retweet, favourite, print screen

Telling us he should have been getting his beauty sleep for the following night’s BAFTAs (where he scooped a gong), Jamie disappeared home, leaving us without a celebrity chum. Fortunately, Chelsea ace Frank Lampard and his bird (Christine Bleakley) stepped in to fill the void.

Life of a baller

Despite our best efforts we were pissed and it was time to pardy pardy Raffles style. On a dance floor previously graced by HRH Wills and Kate and spitting distance from Frank and Christine we threw some final shapes, bought a £50 round and decided to call it a night. At least we managed to get home with a bit more style, we got a taxi.

You know it’s time to go home when you start posing like this…

So it turns out Mr McVitie is quite the boi but underneath the banter he’s got a big heart and a good business head on his shoulders, even if he is – like all of us – just a pawn on the chessboard.

If you fancy a revision break Gleepost uniRoulette is open every Tuesday and Thursday night from 8pm and who knows? Amongst the procrastinators, you might find the man himself. We did.

Student comes home to find man rummaging through coat pockets

An intruder caught by a student in her house has been cleared of burglary after claiming he entered the wrong house by mistake.

Exeter student Verity Langham walked in on Neil Robinson, 38, searching through the pockets of a coat in the kitchen of her Union Road house.

Neil Robinson had previous convictions over the past 20 years

Robinson, of Ludwell Lane, argued he had entered the student house by mistake, confusing it with another he had visited ten days earlier.

The incident, which took place in November, was taken to Exeter Crown Court, where a jury was told Robinson had a criminal record with 11 cases of household burglary over 20 years. His last sentence was in 2010.

According to Robinson, he had attended a party with a student named Annalise ten days earlier, where he drank so much vodka and smoked so much cannabis that he became confused to his actual location when leaving the next day.

He claims that after a one night stand with the student, he left his phone at the property and he had returned to retrieve it.

When Langham found Robinson’s, she confirmed no student named Annalise lived there.

James Taghdissian, prosecuting, said Robinson then pretended to call a friend in order to give off the impression he had entered the wrong house.

While Langham claims she found Robinson checking the pockets of one of her housemates’ coats, he told the jury: “I did not go in there with any intention to steal. I was not looking for anything to steal at all. I never touched the jacket.

“I picked up my rucksack from the chair which it was on.”

Survey shows which subjects have the most hours. Are you working harder than your mates?

It’s the age-old debate: who spends the longest working on their degrees?

Now, we have an answer. Architects are the biggest boffins around, spending almost 40 hours a week in lectures and private study.

Following the wannabe-Norman Fosters closely into the library are the vets, who typically study for 36 hours a week.

But who are the biggest slackers? Bumping along at the bottom of the table you’ll find business students.

They spend around 26 hours a week studying to become the next Alan Sugar.

Research by the Higher Education Policy Institute and Which? suggests the average student spends 30 hours per week on his or her degree.

That’s 25% less time than the Quality Assurance Agency (the squares who monitor standards in higher education) assumes a student will spend studying.

They reckon the average student devotes 1,200 hours a year to his or her degree. The report says it’s actually 900 hours.

The study found huge variations in the number of contact hours students can expect with tutors.

Nationally, medics have around 20 hours of tutorials and lectures a week. History students, on the other hand, are looking at just eight hours of contact time.

This might not come as much surprise, but there are also wild variations in contact hours per subject depending an what uni you go to.

A student studying maths can expect to receive anywhere between 13 and 22 hours of scheduled contact time depending on which university he or she attends.

We know we’re supposed to top up the contact hours with private study, but the average student spends just 17 hours a week working alone.

Architecture students spend around 25 hours per week studying privately, while business students take just 14 hours out of their weeks to do their homework.

The research suggests some students think they’re being short-changed.

A third of students said they might have chosen a different degree if they had known what they do now about their courses.

Exeter engineers prepare for international racing competition

Exeter engineering students are prepping for their first appearance in racing competition Formula Student.

The competition challenges teams to design, build and race a car in a year, testing it at Silverstone Circuit 3rd-7th July.

The international event will be held in the UK, testing our Exeter team against 149 projects from 32 nations.

The team will not only be judged on their track performance but on their skills in design, costing and business presentations.

Influential ex-Exeter students such as Sam Tozer, now a designer with McLaren, and Ted Kravitz, Formula 1 presenter for Sky TV, will be launching the car.

Joe Wait, Exeter Formula Student, said: “ What we really like about this project are the similarities to a real engineering project, which involves working with lots of different people.”

Don't beat around the bush, down those shots!

Sport and Health Sciences at Exeter University are all for students downing their shots – of beetroot juice.

Research looked at the effects of taking shots during exercise and has concluded that two concentrated shots are better than one.

Can’t beet a good shot

Previous studies have shown that the high nitrate content in beetroot juice improves sporting stability and stamina.

During the 2012 Paralympic Games, David Weir – winner of four gold medals – told Boris Johnson it had a big impact on his success.

The experts recommend downing a dose around 2-3 hours before sport for peak performance – so if you’re planning on hitting it hard at Timepiece this Wednesday, make sure you fit the beetroot shots in at pre-drinks.
